MALAWI – ADVICE CENTRE MANAGERS
The British Council and Active Learning Centre are inviting candidates to apply for an ‘ADVICE CENTRE MANAGER’ based in Mangochi and Dedza.
British Council and Active Learning Centre have recently secured funding from the Scottish Government to run a three year project starting April 2010 until April 2013 that aims to assist people to claim their rights through the establishment of two advice centres and outreach clinics in rural areas. The project will try out methods of delivering rights advice and information in the surrounding rural areas to inform future provision of access to justice. The project will run in Mangochi and Dedza.
PRINCIPAL FUNCTION:
To manage the centre which will offer legal rights advice and information to people in Dedza/Mangochi and the surrounding rural areas and through outreach services in the rural areas.
The successful candidates should have demonstrated, through his or her professional experience, all of the essential competencies required for the positions. Candidates who do not meet these minimum requirements will not be shortlisted for an interview.Responsibilities:
Set up and manage the advice centre to provide a legal rights advice and information service
Recruit volunteer paralegal workers to work in the centre to offer rights advice and information in the city, and in the second year of the project to people in the surrounding rural areas
Organise training for the volunteer paralegal workers
Provide professional support to the paralegal workers working in the town and its associated outreach services in the surrounding areas
Institute and manage a case recording system to record client information about the nature of enquiries and details of legal cases
Set up links with local lawyers, the Legal Aid Department, Office of Ombudsman and the Human Rights Commission to establish referral systems to ensure that cases requiring further action are progressed and citizens have access to redress
Set up, support and assist a local advocacy group to take forward issues highlighted by the users of the rights advice and information service
Manage the money allocated to the advice centre by the central office of the Project and to provide financial reports and receipts to the British Council on a monthly basis to account for expenditure
Assist the British Council with legal literacy activities, for example, taking responsibility for the local distribution of leaflets and posters and the broadcast of radio local programmes
Institute and manage a system for gathering monitoring information for the Project on the work of the advice centre, its associated outreach services and the work of the advocacy group and to forward this information to the British Council on a regular basis
Other duties associated with the management of the advice centre and the project that may be determined by the Project Manager and the Project Advisory Committee
ESSENTIAL SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:
A Bachelor’s degree in Law or a Diploma in Law with relevant work experience
Understanding and familiarity with the Malawian legal framework for citizens’ rights and its implications for the rural poor
Proven advocacy skills for the rights of vulnerable groups of society such as the poor, disabled, women, children, senior citizens, etc
Training skills or proven experience of ability to organize training
Excellent written and communication skills; ability to write concise and accurate reports, public speaking skills
Ability to motivate, manage and support a team of volunteer workers
Ability to work on own initiative and with team
Excellent interpersonal skills
Excellent project and people management skills
Computer skills – ability to use word processing, spreadsheet packages, internet and email
Proven ability to perform multiple duties in a focused approach
Willingness to work within the Project’s equality policy

BACKGROUND:
The International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) with headquarters in Ibadan, Nigeria invites applications for the post of Roots and Tuber Systems Agronomist.

IITA is a non-profit organization based in Africa. It works with national entities to increase food production in tropical Africa. POSITION:
The Roots and Tuber Agronomist will work with other agronomists, plant breeders, plant health scientists, social scientists, and other colleagues to develop crop, soil and pest management options for root and tuber systems, with emphasis on cassava and yam based systems. IITA has, in the past, generated several component technologies which when applied in carefully selected combinations and with due consideration to prevailing socioeconomic factors will produce more synergistic and sustained outcomes associated with high cropping system productivity. The Systems Agronomist will provide leadership in synthesizing integrated crop, soil and pest management options with high probability of success in different agro ecological zones in sub-Saharan Africa.

DUTY STATION:
Ibadan, IITA Headquarters, Nigeria. Frequent travel is expected and candidates should be willing to work in small-scale farm settings in Africa.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
The primary responsibilities for the Agronomist will include:
Conducting strategic and adaptive research on the agronomy of root and tuber crops, building on past research and responding to needs as identified jointly with project teams.
Investigating nutrient flows, nutrient use efficiency, and beneficial cultural practices in the use of fertilizers in root and tuber systems.
Investigating adaptation of root and tuber crop germplasm to target environments.
Designing, planning, testing and disseminating integrated crop, soil and pest management strategies for root and tuber systems that address farmers’ needs along different intensification gradients in sub-Saharan Africa
Adapting and testing tools (e.g. simulation models, information systems, and GIS) for matching improved technologies to different farmer-targeted niches for root and tuber crop production.
Contributing to studies on genotype x soil fertility interactions and the design of breeding strategies towards increased fertilizer use efficiency in root and tuber cropping systems.
Contributing to propagation of selected root and tuber crop varieties for widespread and rapid distribution through links with national programs and the private sector.
Resource mobilization through grant proposals and strengthening of partners’ capacities, including co-supervision of postgraduate thesis research with university lecturers.

EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
The candidate should have a PhD degree in Agronomy with experience in integrated crop, soil and pest management

Proven skills and experience in agronomy research both in the field and the laboratory.
Good scientific publication record.
Familiarity with participatory and action research methods.
Modeling of cropping systems.

He/she will undertake project design, implementation and evaluation of program/project activities, data analysis and progress reporting. He/she will provide technical guidance on bio-medical aspect of the MHN program.

RESPONSIBILITY:
•    To plan the project tasks involved in construction of cement plants
•    To prepare construction schedules and to monitor the project for
interim targets and milestones in line with completion dates,
•    Involve in periodical review of the project progress, update project
progress on periodical basis and prepare reports for site personnel,
•    Prepare presentations and be responsible for project related MIS
(management Information Systems).
QUALIFICATION:
B.SC / B.ENG. in Civil Engineering or Mechanical Engineering
SKILLS:
•    Proficient in handling MS Projects version 2007 and / or primavera version 6,
•    Must have hands-on experience in project control with abilities to
generate periodical progress reports and analysis,
•    Must be a result oriented individual with good communication and
analytical skills.
•    Must be a fast learner willing to learn and develop himself in
challenging environments

Job Purpose
  • The principal role of the Engineering Technical Apprentice is to gain a comprehensive understanding of all aspects of the aircraft mechanics function within British Airways engineering.
  • The technical apprentice will have interaction across all areas of the engineering department and will assist in ensuring that all maintenance is carried out in compliance with the appropriate regulatory legislation, ensuring that British Airways’ fleet of aircraft are maintained to the highest possible standard.
  • In addition, the role requires flexibility, enthusiasm, a can-do attitude and the requirement to work effectively within a team whilst successfully completing a comprehensive academic qualification programme.

Responsibilities

Principal Accountabilities
  • Responsible for understanding all aspects of the aircraft mechanic role within key production areas of engineering including hangars, workshops, warehousing and logistics areas.
  • Carry out computer and documentary transactions as required Representing specific area interests at meetings
  • Successful completion of PEO (Performing Engineering Operations) Level 2
  • Successful completion of Functional skills modules in mathematics, communications and IT
  •  Successful completion of City and Guilds 2661 and NVQ Level 3
  • During the role there will be a requirement for an involvement in specific tasks and projects to assist in both the completion of the NVQ but also to support the business.
  • Specific coaching will be provided throughout the programme to ensure both understanding and competence.
  • There will also be a requirement to manage and deliver non-engineering projects to develop skills in team building, communications, budgeting and prioritisation.
